Creating Common Goals with Your Team Cultivates Personal and Organizational Success

How to Set Common Goals

In a business, it goes without saying that the vision for the company should dictate goals for its employees. Whether this is in the form of a business plan, mission statement, or value proposition, having aspirational forethought keeps everyone in the organization working for the same outcomes. However, success will not look the same in different departments, given their different functions. This makes it critical for teams and departments to create their own common goals that support the overall mission of the company, but also helps employees explore and grow individually. Here’s how you can set common goals with your team to set each other up for success.

Have a Discussion

The first step to setting common goals is to get everyone together to discuss what their own goals are, both in the personal and professional realms. Everyone needs to be involved. This is a crucial meeting of the minds for any team; by stating what we want out loud we are acknowledging our hopes, committing to pursuing those goals, and giving coworkers an opportunity to support each other. This is also a great time to help those unsure members articulate what it is they hope to accomplish.

Goals may be directly job-related, like increasing sales or improving customer service, or may involve learning a specific skill that can be integrated into the workplace, such as video editing or photography. The doors should be open for all employees to take initiative within their roles and evolve in a way that fits them personally.

Figure Out How It All Fits Together

Once everyone has laid out their own goals, the team can then discuss how to help everyone meet them, and also how everyone’s aspirations can take on a symbiotic relationship. The types of goals may be very different from one another, but they can all exist together.

If one team member is interested in podcasts, and another wants to expand revenue-generating activities, that is a project they can take on together. A podcast for the company can be created with the hope of earning sponsors or paid advertising, and is a great vehicle for establishing the company’s brand.

Be careful not to compare the merits of each goal because you run the risk of creating hurt feelings or accidentally belittling someone’s dreams; this will not result in a productive conversation. For example, making more money and contributing to the greater good do not have to be mutually exclusive. It is not amoral to hope to bring in a larger paycheck as long as it is done honestly. Contributing to the greater good doesn’t have to be a drain on resources and might not be able to be the focus of every project. Both of these objectives can occur together with planning.

Once goals are established and mapped out, it is time to circle back and ensure that they all support the overall vision of the company. This is not as challenging or intimidating as it may sound. If the mission statement is well-laid out, most intentions can be explored and honed to fit fairly easily.

Setting milestones is a great way to keep the team on track both with their own aspirations, as well as with their contributions to the business. It offers each member a road map so they can identify where they are, where they need to be, and how they can get there. These milestones must simultaneously stretch and challenge workers while still being achievable. If the checkpoints are not reasonably attainable, workers will grow frustrated and lose interest in the process. Striking a balance between encouraging growth and promoting achievement is key.

To keep everyone on the same page, hold regularly-scheduled goal tracking meetings. This is a great time for everyone to catch up and analyze how things are going. Some important questions to ask are:

  • How is this working?
  • How engaged are we as a team?
  • Are we meeting goals? If not, why not?
  • Do we need to recalibrate?
  • Who needs more support?

Setting common goals is important to keep employees focused not just on just results, but also on the process. We can meet the vision for the organization by letting each individual pursue their own goals while simultaneously acting for the good of the company.

We often forget to have this conversation with our employees, because the general mindset is company before self. However, everyone can get to where they want to be together, without compromising the organization’s mission. It’s all about finding ways to make it work through common goals. Our teams will be more engaged if they feel they have the autonomy to explore the boundaries of their roles and pursue company-related projects that excite them.

The Kim Kardashian West Conversion

Canva

A polarizing public figure and reality star, Kim Kardashian West is one of those celebrities you either love or hate. She is often slammed for being vain, vapid, and fame-obsessed, among other things. Now, she is being criticized for wanting to pursue a career in law, following in the footsteps of her father Robert Kardashian.

While her method to becoming a lawyer seems unconventional (you can read more about it here), it is both legitimate and legal. She is putting in her time through independent study and apprenticeship, and yet that is not enough for the critics, who feel she should “stay in her lane.”

Kardashian West has been extremely successful in building her brand and becoming an accomplished businesswoman, which is often overlooked as “less than” because she is a reality star, social media figure, and fashion guru, therefore she hasn’t done anything “important.” She is often viewed by the public as someone who is shallow and incapable of contributing to society. Needless to say, the public has had trouble taking seriously the revelation that Kardashian West wants to be a lawyer.

However, let’s examine the flip side for a minute. Kardashian West has built an empire and a fan base of people who pay attention to her just because of who she is. That is power. It is an incredible use of that power for Kardashian West to better herself through the study of law in the hopes of making an impact as a lawyer. She is in a position to draw attention to the important issues, and will likely inspire her fans to pursue their dream careers and make a difference in their own way. She deserves respect for moving forward with her education in a way that works for her, regardless of the criticism and taunting she receives.

We, and women especially, can learn two things from Kardashian West. Regardless of where you are now and what you are doing, you can always branch out in a new direction, pursue a new dream, and try things that are seemingly opposite of your current path. It doesn’t and shouldn’t matter, and it is definitely never too late. There is a time and place to “stay in your own lane,” but the process of chasing your dreams and goals should never be one of them. Secondly, you cannot pay attention to the haters. Kardashian West (and many others in history) would never have gotten to the level of success they have achieved if they had taken personally the comments of even one doubter. When you do something that is unexpected, for some reason others may have a hard time coping with that—and it’s not your problem. Your story is about you, and your life should be lived for the things that fulfill you. Everything else is just background noise.

Whether you are a big fan of the Kardashian clan or not, it is admirable for Kardashian West to take a risk and challenge herself. It will be interesting to see what she does with this new chapter of her life.

Creating Momentum in Your Career: You Have the Power

For many of us who feel the hustle in our veins, we are always trying to level
up in our careers. Success is a constant carrot dangling in front of our
noses; the higher we climb, the more we want to continue. The fastest way
to progress your career and achieve your dreams is to create your own
momentum, which can be easier said than done.

Let me take you back to middle school science class for a moment.
Momentum is calculated as mass multiplied by velocity. So the more you
expand and grow and the speed in which you do it creates momentum. It is
hard to start the pendulum swinging when you are at rest, but once you get
moving, momentum in your career will build, and there will be no stopping
you! While there are many ways to build momentum in your industry, here
are some options that you can start with right now.

Learn to Recognize and Create Your Own Opportunities

Opportunity is always out there. The more you train yourself to recognize
them, the more opportunities will present themselves to you. Whether it’s a
new networking connection suggesting you meet for coffee sometime, a
manager looking for solutions on a company pain point, or a local school
needing volunteers to work with students on Career Day, opportunity exists
in many forms. Take note, and throw yourself in wholeheartedly! You never
know where a conversation can lead.

If you are finding that you are in something of an “opportunity drought,” dig
deep and create a new endeavor for yourself. Map out a proposal for an
exciting project at work. Finally, start writing the book you’ve always wanted
to publish. Learn to code your own website. Regardless of what you want to
pursue, you don’t need anyone’s permission to do it. Adding more irons to
your fire will help your career ignite.

Talk Up Your Endeavors

As you embark on the countless opportunities at your fingertips, don’t forget
to tell people what you are up to! They will never know about your new skills
and adventures if you never bring them up! Plus, your coworkers, family,
and friends are likely to want to support you in any way they can. As you
create buzz around yourself and your work, the odds become higher for your
success.

For those of you who avoid self-promotion because you don’t want to “brag,”
don’t think of it in a negative way. Whatever your career entails, it likely involves helping others in some way and that has value. Plus, when you
encourage others to talk up what’s new in their lives as well, and offer them
your own support, you are creating a mutual benefit.

Give Back and Support Others

On a more spiritual side, gratitude and goodwill create more abundance in
your life. By being grateful for where you are right now, you are inviting
more good things into your life. Giving back generates good karma, and
gives you connections with others who you may be able to collaborate with
in the future.

Whether you become a mentor, volunteer with a local organization, or
simply broadcast the successes of others, you are broadening your horizons,
learning new skills, and reminding yourself of what is truly important in life.
At the end of the day, true success means having a positive impact on
someone else, whatever that looks like to you. Regardless of anything else
going on in your work and personal life, if you took the time today to help
others, you are a success.

Essentially, creating momentum in your career starts and ends with you.
Putting yourself out into the world and using your work to interact with
society is crucial to growth and progress. Don’t hold back. Take some risks.
Do what you’ve always wanted.

Women Don’t Have to Own Inequality

There has been significant media coverage of women in the workplace,
especially as Women’s History Month comes to a close. We are so often
hearing stories about our sisters not being treated equally, or not being
recognized for their outstanding work. It can be draining to be inundated
with everything that is wrong with society and feeling at a loss for how to
correct things that are bigger than just us. However, we have to take a
stand against constant negative images we are shown about how women
fare in their careers.

It’s easy to be influenced by the bad press the workplace gets surrounding
women. Women don’t make as much money as men, especially if they are
women of color; they are overlooked; they are objectified in the office; etc.
Don’t get me wrong, all of these things tend to be true, and it is important
that we change them. However, we must also take care not to internalize
these messages. If we as women, go into a work situation and expect to be
marginalized, overlooked, and underpaid, we are creating and manifesting a
self-fulfilling prophecy. If you act as though the cards are stacked against
you, they almost certainly will be. The goal is not to erase the experiences of
women in the workplace, but to rise above them and not get stuck in one
place.

Instead, you must act as though you will always be treated as well as men.
You will not be overlooked because you will make yourself visible. You will be
considered competent, because you are. Your mindset affects how you
present yourself, and often, if you are feeling at a disadvantage, the persona
you present will match that, even if it isn’t true to who you are. If you apply
the mentality of “women struggle to be successful in the workplace” to
yourself, then you are writing your own outcome. Words and thoughts are
powerful. You can acknowledge the problems and the struggle without
dwelling on them.

So today, when a coworker presents your idea as their own, take credit for
your work. If you feel underappreciated and overlooked, find a way to let
your superiors know how important your contributions are (yes, you must
self-promote). Ask for the raise you’ve been wanting. Improvements for
women in the workplace start with each of us owning our greatness,
wherever we are. Don’t forget where we’ve all been, but move forward
unencumbered into the full potential that you have inside of you.

How to Adapt Your Leadership to Different Cultures

Working with clients and colleagues in another country is a wonderful
opportunity to expand your business and meet interesting, intelligent
people. However, it is vital that you understand the cultural norms and
expectations in countries that are not your own, in order to connect with
your clients in a way that is meaningful and useful to them. So how do you
adapt your work and leadership style to a different culture?

Adjust Your Mindset

Adjusting your mindset is one of the most important strategies when
conducting business in a foreign country. You cannot just walk in and
operate the way you are used to, mainly because cultures in other countries
dictate otherwise. Not everyone shares the same point of view as you do, so
in order to be effective, you must adjust your own mindset to match that of
your clients.

The best way to do this is simply to be curious. Research business practices
and expectations in the country you will be travelling to, as well as the
customs and the people. This will give you a starting point for your
adjustment and help you feel prepared. Once you are on location, notice
how people behave and interact with each other. What seems to be
important to them? What are the power dynamics?

In the United States, there is very much a culture of collaboration, where
employees at all levels interact and share ideas openly. However, other
countries view honesty and outspokenness as disrespectful, or as reserved
for the most senior members. You can see why a businessperson in the
United States might need to tone down their approach in order to fit in and
meet expectations.

Recalibrate Your Services

Because different cultures and countries have points of view unique to their
experience you also will need to rethink the services you provide and how
they may need to change in order to be more beneficial. The strategy an
executive coach offers a client in the United States may not be appropriate
in Japan or Paris, but can be reframed in order to achieve the same result.
The same idea applies to other industries. If your focus is in customer
experience, you must recognize that not everyone wants the same results,
and will not have the same experience.

Reassess the Meanings of Core Values

While the casual business participant may think that most core values are
universal, the experienced practitioner knows that this isn’t exactly the case.
The concepts of Integrity and Trust might be present in businesses
worldwide, but the definition of these terms and what they look like in
practicality may not be the same. It becomes incumbent upon you to to find
out what such terms really mean in the country you are working in. Make
sure you understand your clients’ working definitions of these concepts so
that you are speaking the same language and are coming from the same
place. Discussing this upfront will prevent miscommunications, and will make
you feel more comfortable in your environment. Culture shock is a real
experience, but having a base understanding of a country and its norms will
help you make an easier transition. It will also help you avoid offending
others or doing something that would be deemed inappropriate.

Working with new countries broadens your horizons and strengthens your
skills in many ways. However, you still must provide value to your clients, no
matter where they are. If you work only in the way that is natural to you, it
is likely that you are not serving foreign clients in a way that is valuable for
them. And if you act in unexpected, unusual ways as deemed by a country’s
culture, your clients will likely have a strong negative response. Making such
adjustments to your mindset and services, and learning about the nuances
of core values will not only help your success, but the client will also feel
respected. Whether you research independently or have upfront
conversations about expectations, you can avoid most miscommunications
or missteps and set yourself up for a healthy working relationship.

How to Cultivate Positive Change in Your Business through Personal Branding

Shifting your personal brand can actually lead you to greater success. While change can be painful, at the same time, it’s the only way for you to continue to grow. And if you don’t grow, how can you change things?

personal brandingDian Diaz, brand strategist and self-proclaimed brand geek of The Brand Teacher joined us on the Planting Seeds of Change podcast to share insights from two decades of branding and teaching experience that will help us creative positive changes beginning with our personal brand.

Trust Comes with Consistency

Personal branding is at it’s core making sure your personal presence comes through everywhere it touches your audience. Consistency with how you show up in your brand builds trust in your audience. That’s what draws people to you. When your brand is consistent and your audience gets the same messages wherever they encounter you, they’ll trust you and then want to do business with you. Personal branding is all about building trust.

Bring Forward Your Personality

Personal branding is important because people are doing business with you personally. Yes, it’s your business, but they’re really doing business with a human being. Personal branding applies to everyone from the executive to the stay-at-home mom. If your personal brand comes across differently from the way you want to go with your career or life, it’s not going to take you there. You have to shift it around so certain attributes about you will come through. It’s about taking your authentic personality and bringing it out so it shows up online.

Get Feedback on Your Brand

Survey your audience to find out how you’re coming across. Make sure their answers align with how you want to be perceived and in a way that will lead you to your goals. If you don’t know how they’re seeing you, you can’t make those changes. Get feedback from them and then make changes to your personal brand.

Ask your friends, family, and co-workers. People who you trust will be able to give you insightful feedback. Tell them you’d like to better understand how you’re coming across to other people so you can meet your goals. This will get you started on understanding where there’s a disconnect between how you want to come across and how you actually come across.

Remember that your brand lives in the heart of your audience, Dian advised. You don’t get to decide how others feel. You can only align how you want to come across with how you actually are coming across.

Look at Feedback as a Whole

You will get feedback that surprises you. It may be just one thing one person says that stings. Try to look at feedback as a whole and not only one word someone says. That could be an outlier. You’re not going to make an overall change based on that one thing. That feedback might not even impact how you get to your goal. Instead, look at the aggregate and find themes. You can do something with that.

Accept the gift of feedback and dismiss what doesn’t impact your goals. Focus on your goal.

Be Yourself in a New Position

I’ve seen professionals that think because they’re a professional they have to behave a certain way. We connect with human beings with personalities and we want to feel those connections. If you don’t understand why you aren’t getting the results you expect, it’s simple. It’s being authentic and sharing who you are.

Sometimes we want to go in another direction, but we’re stuck using the same set of characteristics. You shouldn’t not be yourself, but you want to take what matches in your personality with the position you want to move into. If you’re moving into a leadership role, you can still be outgoing, but you might shift to highlight other aspects of you.

Start with Massive Curiosity

Approach everything with a level of curiosity, including yourself. Be inquisitive about how others see you and how well you’ve done your job. Being inquisitive to get feedback that might be a little uncomfortable will be the catalyst for great growth and positive change.

Characteristics to Look For in Your Next Executive Coach

Corporate Training and Executive Coaching For Conscious OrganizationsFinding an executive and leadership coach that is the perfect fit for both you and your business takes a fair amount of research, but is well worth the effort when you connect with someone who can unlock your potential as a leader. If you’re new to leadership coaching, the process may seem overwhelming and it can be tempting to simply start working with the first coach you find. However, there are specific qualities you should be looking for in an executive coach to ensure that they are both qualified and a good match for your needs. Here are five steps you should be taking when shopping for a coach, and what they will reveal about their methods.

Evaluate their profile

It is essential that you interview any coach that you are interested in working with, just as you would with a potential new employee. This will be most telling about their style of coaching and approach. You are looking for someone who is open-minded, an active listener, and completely focused on the process. An ideal coach will create a safe and exploratory environment for you to grow, and will have forward-thinking conversations with you to help you find the solutions that work for you. They should  also feel strongly that any success belongs to you. Red flags include coaches who promise extraordinary results or have a one-size-fits all approach.

Check for Credentials

The leadership and executive coaching market is saturated with many professionals, but not all of them have the skills or experience to give you and your business the value you deserve. When looking at a potential coach, look them up on the International Coach Federation registries or the registries of the Board of Credentialing for Coaches. These two accrediting boards register coaches based on their experience, education, and the number of hours they have worked with clients. They also require continuing education to ensure that their coaches have the most current information and are keeping up with their skills.

Look Out for Coherence

It is important to evaluate the level of coherence a potential coach has between what they promote and what they themselves practice. In particular, you should find out if they have their own executive coach. Theoretically, if they believe in the power of coaching, they should also have a coach of their own so that they can continue to expand just as their clients are. Similarly, an executive coach should belong to a supervising group to reflect with on a regular basis about their practice as a coach. If an executive coach is encouraging your growth, but is not working to grow themselves as well, there is misalignment between their mindset and actions.

Understand the Coaching Process

An executive coach worth their weight must offer a customized approach in working with you. Cookie-cutter consulting isn’t providing you any value and certainly cannot be considered coaching. Valuable coaching is about adapting to you as the client, and bringing individual solutions for your specific situation. An executive coach is there to help you build and design the strategies for what you want and need.

Investigate References and Recommendations

Finally, when researching executive coaches, it is imperative that you look for their references and recommendations. Most commonly, you may be able to find these on the coach’s LinkedIn profile or perhaps even on their website. This will be useful to you in two ways. Firstly, you will be able to see who the coach works with, and whether or not they have worked with individuals or businesses that are similar to you. Secondly, you will get a feel for how the coach works and how they help manifest success for their clients, and whether or not that will be useful to you.

These key indicators are important to consider when researching possible executive coaches. You may be interested in an industry-specific coach, but here at Equanimity Executive, we don’t believe that is necessary. Coaches with industry-specific experience may wind up becoming more of an advisor or consultant due their inside knowledge, but keep in mind that this advice isn’t what you are looking for. You ultimately need a coach that challenges you and gives you the opportunity to create new opportunities for yourself.  Similarly, industry-specific coaches can have biases based on their own work and that may limit your exploration and innovation. As adaptive executive coaches, Equanimity Executive focuses on your needs as they are, from a fresh and open-minded perspective.

Looking for an executive or leadership coach may seem like an overwhelming prospect, but by considering these qualities, you will find a professional with the personality and ability to relate to you and your needs.

Your [Presidential] Choice, A Decision Based On Emotions

By Ron Bonnstetter

Do You Know the SCIENCE Behind Your Presidential Vote?

An election year is always a polarizing time for the country. A nation is divided not only by the issues, but the strong emotions evoked by those issues.

This year is particularly fascinating (or frightening, depending on who you ask) with candidates rising in the ranks who are downright shocking to many individuals. To say voters are scratching their heads as to how the top candidates have stayed at the top is the understatement of the century.

Take Donald Trump, for instance. Headline after headline, and article after article, debate how his campaign has catapulted so far with no political experience and shock-value speeches. Bernie Sanders’ rise to popularity has been equally interesting; never before have voters embraced a candidate with such strong socialist views.

What’s happening here? Water cooler chatter may have you believing the country is falling apart, but I believe another culprit is to blame – neurology.

You see, the rise of candidates like Trump and Sanders can be attributed to voters’ disdain for the current political environment. They are rejecting the status quo and craving change – and this is manifesting by them embracing a candidate they believe represents the opposite. It’s simple avoidance.

The power of avoidance

And what we know about avoidance is that it’s a more powerful force than acceptance.

In addition, voters are making their decisions based on emotions, anger and fear being on the top of the list. When we look at emotion-based decisions from a brain perspective, gamma waves activity is an early indicator in the process. In this case, a presidential candidate giving us a pre-cognitive response before we’ve even had a chance to process or rationalize that response. Furthermore, moments after our brain has a strong knee-jerk reaction, it many times works to justify that decision, rather than weigh it objectively.

So essentially, if the masses are emotionally charged about America’s political landscape – as we know they are – when they hear a candidate’s message, there’s a high probability their brain has instantly made up its mind to accept or avoid that message in less than a second’s time.

Ultimately, it’s likely no amount of rational thinking or argument will help a voter change their mind, at least without awareness of what is happening at a neurological level.

Precognitive emotion or rational decision

Much is at stake this election cycle, as with any election year. However, with awareness of how the inner workings of our brains function, reflect closely why you are casting your ballot for a certain candidate. Ask yourself if you carefully weighed your decision or if your choice came as more of a knee-jerk reaction and you are spending all your time justifying that emotional, precognitive decision.

Helping yourself inside out: Hacking Anxiety attacks

Anxiety Attacks: Hypnosis and Coaching to attack the panic!

by Yasmine Verberckt, hypnotherapist and Reiki Healing level 1 & 2 practitioner in Southern California.

Sadly anxiety has become the number one Mental Health issue in North America.  It is estimated that one third of the American adult population experiences anxiety in their life – National Institute of Mental Health. To put this in perspective: these numbers are similar to the obesity statistics of 2011-2012.  So what is anxiety really, why has it become such a big issue and more importantly what can be done about it?

We all experience anxiety in our lives at one point or another. Occasional anxiety is quite acceptable and a normal part of life.  We may be anxious when interviewing for a job, while awaiting test results, when in a life threatening situation or having to make an important decision.

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease typically about an event in the past or the future.  Feelings and the degree of worry can vary quite a bit depending on the individual can’t they?  I am sure you can think of at least one person in your life that is overwhelmed, stressed out, nervous or shall we say anxious?  On the other hand very likely you also know of a different kind of person, you know the one I am referring to; the one that seems to handle it all, juggling a career, school, kids, … and is just a ball of life and energy no matter what happens.  How can that be? They both have eyes, a nose, lungs, a heart and a mind.

AAAHHH the mind.  Even though the anatomy is similar, the way it is used may be different.  We are on to something here, can you sense it?

Most of us have this notion that the mind can be divided into the conscious and subconscious part.  Most of us are also aware that the subconscious part is the biggest engine of the two.  The one that drives your behavior, thoughts and therefore feelings.  Compare it to your computer’s programming.  This program of yours has a very simple yet effective mechanism in place.  We use different words for it, some of them may be familiar, they all are referring to the same: the fight-flight response, sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system or our basic instinct for survival.

What does this have to do with anxiety?

Thank you for asking, we are getting to the nitty gritty here.

Play a game with Yasmine

What happens to your body and your emotions when you find yourself in a situation that is uncomfortable, makes you nervous or let’s go big: life threatening.  Perhaps a speech you’re about to give, the boss called you in her/his office, the doctor really wanted to speak with you, a partner that couldn’t talk to you on the phone but had to see you in person?

– sweaty palms                                                             – panic

– queasy stomach                                                       – expecting the worst

– heart starts beating faster                                    – feeling worried

– breathing shifts                                                         – muscle tension

– worse case scenario’s seem to always win     – feeling drained

– ….

Let’s keep playing; what are some of the symptoms associated with anxiety?  What are some of the bodily reactions when we feel threatened or in danger?  YES!! similar to the above.  This means we can conclude that non life threatening situations are also activating our basic instinct for survival.  See our mind doesn’t know the difference between reality and fantasy.  Movies aren’t real, they are a projection of images, yet we respond to them with our emotions, we laugh, cry, get scared or if it’s a bad movie we may yawn. The movies we decide to play in our head, based on a past or future event, trigger the same program.  WOW! so it IS all about the mind.

Now what?
